While we can’t put a halt on the change of seasons, we can take the proper measures to ensure that our homes are prepared for whatever Old Man Winter has up his sleeve.

Pay attention to the roof over your head
One of the biggest concerns during a winter storm is the roof. In fact, snow can cause structural and water damage. Before snow is even in the forecast, do an inspection from the ground, and look for any sign of broken shingles. If you do spot something out of the ordinary, contact a roofer immediately to ensure that the repairs can be made before it’s too late.

Stay warm and toasty
The last thing that anyone wants or needs during a winter storm is for their HVAC system to stop working. A malfunctioning heater during frigid temperatures can lead to frozen pipes and health issues. Instead, stay ahead of the game, and have your heating system serviced before the first big storm arrives.

Keep an eye on your pipes
Freezing temperatures can do a number on your plumbing. Before a winter storm, doing simple things like insulating exposed pipes, and turning on your faucets to a slow drip will help keep your pipes from freezing and bursting. However, if you do see signs of pipes freezing, use a hairdryer to blow warm air and reverse any freezing that has already taken place.

Shovel your way out
Yes, everyone knows that having a shovel and salt on hand is necessary for clearing your walkways. But, a shovel can also help keep your roof and HVAC system in-check. During a heavy snowfall, it’s important to remove snow from around and on your heating system.

Tip: Take plenty of breaks while you shovel as it can put a serious strain on your cardiovascular system.
