Once known as Harveys Pond, and then Gouldsboro Lake, present-day Lake Watawga is a living legacy to a bygone era.  Because of its lofty elevation, the lake was chosen as a suitable site for an ice-farming operation in the 1880s.  The coming of refrigeration ended the labor-intensive era, but if you close your eyes and listen very carefully, you may hear the distant sounds of horses pulling ice   wagons and the whistle of a train wafting faintly through the air.
